My Journey to be a Freemason

Written by Bill Manigold
Thursday, 29 October 2009 13:11

I am a Freemason; my journey began several years ago with three knocks, which were answered from within! On the road to be a better man than I am, before I began the journey. How great, is this opportunity and gift I have been given, how great that I received it simply by asking.

To fraternize with my well informed Brethren, united in a fellowship and devoted to charity. I continually ask myself, what do I possibly have to contribute to such a great Fraternity? Perhaps it's a tentative ear or watchful eye, gathering all the light that may be imparted to me in a Lodge of Master Masons.

There is much going on around me. The tools of the craft, the square, the compasses, the plumb, the trowel, all busy in executing the designs drawn upon the trestleboard. There is much to know and understand, and yet, in the few short years of my journey, I can say that "I am becoming a better person"; a direct result of my Brethren guiding me and showing me the way.

Brief History of Wall Lodge No.73

Excerpts from the 1966 booklet by Paul Martin, PM

In the year 1865, just at the end of the war between the States, this lodge was formed and obtained the first of many rooms.

The Building Committee secured a room, negotiated a lease and reported that it would cost $133.50 to repair and fix up the room for the lodge to meet. Thus commenced the Lodge Room problem of Wall Lodge.

The Lodge moved from room to room in the Squan Village nineteen times before the turn of the century. The reasons for moving are seldom given, but one move was from a room in a hotel owned and operated by member, because it failed to provide sufficient spittoons. Read more...

Excerpts of Original Documentation by Edmund C. Moore, Historian
circa 100th Anniversary

A petition for a lodge to be located at Bricksburg, now Lakewood, in Ocean County was accompanied by a recommendation from Harmony Lodge No. 18, Dated January 9th, 1868.

From 1878 to 1885, Bricksburg passed from an industrial community to a resort town when the shops and furnaces connected with the iron industry were closed. By the spring of 1884 the few faithful members were faced with surrendering the Warrant or moving to Ocean Beach, which is now Belmar. Read more...

Excerpts from the 50 year booklet, 1972

On May 5 1922 the Grand Lodge of New Jersey met in emergent communication in Ocean Grove for the purpose of constituting Spring Lake Lodge, No. 239.

We had forty-seven charter members at the end of this first year: most of whom had demitted from Ocean and Wall Lodges to affiliate with the new Lodge. Nine of this first Masonic staff were Past Masters.

Brief History of Ocean Grove No.238

Written by Harris Goldstein
Thursday, 05 November 2009 13:04
Excerpts from the 50 year booklet, April 1972

The charter members began to look for a suitable place to hold their meetings. The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association offered the third floor of their building at 50-20 Pitman Avenue, which was an unfinished loft area.

A handful of interested brethren immediately began to prepare the offered quarters as a lodge hall. By May 5, 1922 when the Grand Master came to Ocean Grove to constitute Ocean Grove Lodge No. 238, and incidentally Spring Lake Lodge No. 239 the same day, the lodge hall was adequately equipped and met with the approval of the Grand Master and his committee.
